Hot off the grill; Essential safety tips for your next BBQ

Aug 19, 2023Aug 19, 2023

We all know Kansas City loves its barbecue! Grilling is one of the most popular summertime activities. Before you fire up the grill, here are essential tips and important reminders for a safe grilling season:

Gas vs. Charcoal

If you use a gas grill, check the propane tank for leaks before lighting the grill. Mix two-thirds water and one-third soap together, and apply the solution to the hose and connections. If bubbles form, there is a leak. Turn off the gas immediately and have it repaired or replaced before using the grill.

If you use a charcoal grill, only use charcoal starter fluid designed for grilling. Do not use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start the fire. Never add starter fluid once the fire has started.

Properly dispose of cooled charcoal by emptying coals into a metal container and sealing tightly with a lid. Place the container away from any flammable objects and materials.

City Code

City code prohibits those living in apartments and condominium communities from using gas or charcoal grills within 10 feet of the building or any other combustible construction, unless that building has an automated sprinkler system.
